Inspiration and weight loss goals

These are my favourite jeans. Why, I hear you ask, is she showing us a pair of Levis? Good question. It’s because they don’t fit, and haven’t done for quite a few years. But they will. Again.

Project 365 - my weekly round-up

I'm going to go with a weekly 365 round-up from now on as sometimes it's difficult to find the time to upload every day. Going from left to right and top to bottom this week in my life shows

Dot having fun in the snow the day school was closed. Unfortunately this only happened on Monday and she had to trek to school in the snow for the rest of the week - which you can imagine didn't go down well.

A snowy scene into the distance as Spice and I headed cross country.

Spice, the little man himself, enjoying the snow.

Homemade soup - yum. Tasty and warming, even if I did put too much pasta in it. This soup lasted for ages and fed Dot and I for quite a few days, in Dot's case, sometimes twice a day (she loved it.) I'm not a cook so I'm very proud of this, especially as I didn't follow a recipe but made it up as I went along.

The view across the fields taken from the wood where the dog and I love to walk. All the rain has made the wood very difficult to get through due to the mud and mulch, but the snow and cold hardened it all up so we took advantage and enjoyed a leisurely two-hour stroll.

Another view through the wood, honestly it is so beautiful in the snow that I could take photos of it all day. It's the white against the bare branches that creates the fairytale look, a bit Narnia-like.

My Christmas poinsettia still looking great. I'm hoping it will stay healthy and last until next Christmas...

Looking for - and finding - the happiness in life

You're not from round here

Sometimes my daughter winds me up so much I feel like I'm going to explode. She can be so cheeky and the amount of back chat I get from her brings steam shooting out of my ears. One of those times happened tonight, over the silliest thing. Anyway, it's over now, she has gone to bed and I have calmed down.

Home hair colour - Schwarzkopf Color Mask

Today I coloured my hair. It's not my favourite job, as I get the stuff everywhere - sink, ears, boobs, neck - but when you're blessed with hereditary greys as I am, it's a total necessity.

A coffee break with... Sarah Silvester

In the first of what I hope will become a regular interview feature at 40s Chic we catch up with natural beauty expert Sarah Silvester.

Sarah is the founder of Laidbare Skincare, a brand that uses only natural ingredients in its formulations; she also sources natural beauty products – including fragrance and make-up – from around the world through her company Touch My Face.

The company donates 10% of its profits to Sreepur, a charity that through education, supports more than 100 destitute mothers and 450 children in Sreepur village, Bangladesh.

The view from the woods - I have no idea why it has come out black and white!

This is my beautiful Christmas poinsettia, which is still looking amazing even though the festive season is long gone now (or so it feels to me anyway). The next image I took using the macro setting on my camera - I'm told it's better for close-up photographs but I don't see any difference really. I think I need to read a book on photography and improve my skills. Another thing to add for the list this year.

The art of fashion

I love this dress from the Ruby + Ed spring summer collection. It looks like summer – all those colours, very like one of my favourite paintings, Water lilies, by Monet.

I love this little trio of carol singers. Dot made them for Christmas in year 6 at primary school and they have adorned our living room ever since. The are too cute to just put out at Christmas so they have in fact become a year round choir.

My dinner, courtesy of Jenny Craig. I have been following this diet for a while now and this is one of my favourites among all the meals included in the hamper, probably because I often make veggie bean chilli myself and have done since I was a student.

As for how much weight has come off... let's just say I'm happy with my progress, but that I have a long way to go. Why is it that putting on weight is so easy and happens so quickly, yet taking it off again is so difficult? Alas, that is one of the great questions of life!

A winter view - taken on a funny angle in order to make it more interesting. It seems all I do is walk the dog as my photographs are very similar - well, you're right, apart from sitting at my desk working (and that doesn't make for a good photo at all) that is pretty much my life at the moment. Dot is at school - and doesn't like having her picture taken anyway, the cats refuse to pose and the dog has already appeared in 365 twice (and we're only mid January)! Tomorrow ... my dinner.

The mist in the distance is heading our way - don't worry, it's just winter
doing its thing, not a scene from a horror film approaching (I hope).

Thank goodness for these, without them walking the dog would be much more boring!

Subbing in London again today, same place, same company. They're a really great bunch to work with and my time there is so 'Healthy'.

The local allotments aren't looking at their best at the moment, but seeing them reminded me - is this the year I'm going to apply for one and grow my own veg? It makes sense. I didn't do it before because I was so busy with my darling horse, but now he has gone, why not? It gives me fresh air, exercise, healthy food and a new hobby - where do I sign up?

Beauty review - Orico Full Cup Bust & Neck Enhancing Elixir

When I first read about new Orico advanced pure urban skincare and requested a sample from the PR for some reason I thought I would receive an eye treatment. I hadn't registered the various other products in the range, so I was more than surprised when a bottle of Full Cup Bust & Neck Enhancing Elixir dropped through the letter box.

The last tin of Christmas sweets - quick, somebody hide them before I blow my diet in the first week!

Project 365 - 2/365

Taking the tree down - a sad day every year

#50 books 2013

When I was young I was an avid reader, yet these days I hardly seem to read at all - other than magazines and blogs, which great though they are don't demand the same amount of attention and time as books do. So I've decided to join in with the 50 Book Challenge hosted by Mama Owl and with great optimisim I intend to read the grand total of 50 books before the end of 2013.

My first tome is not a novel but a non fiction book about how women deal with life's issues: Eating, Drinking, Overthinking by Dr Susan Nolen-Hoeksema is proving to be a real eye opener for me and I challenge any woman not to find something of relevance in it to their lives.

I will post a full review on this book when I've finished it, but in the meantime, if you would like to join in the 50 Book Challenge you can find the linky here.

Project 365 - 1/365

I have decided to take part in Project 365. This is a photography linky hosted by The Boy And Me and involves posting a photograph every day for a year.

My word for 2013

With myself

I will be true to my feelings and thoughts

I will acknowledge the reality of any situation and not dress it up or kid myself it's something it's not

I will trust my judgement and place as much value on my understanding of events and situations as I do on those of other people

I will listen to me and not just others

I will believe in me

With others

If I can't do something for whatever reason I will say so

I will not say yes constantly to demands on my time - I will say no when I need to

I will talk rather than keep things bottled up

I will not take on work that does not value my time or skills

I will spend more time with the people I love, both family and friends

And less time on events and people that bring me down...

It's not meant to be twee or self indulgent, it's the one word that has shone out this new year, the word that sums up 2013 (at this early stage, admittedly). I read a fab post from The Bottom of the Ironing Basket that inspired me to find my word and more inspiration here and here. It really speaks to me - I don't know why, I just know this word is important for me for the year ahead.

Does it make sense to you - do you have a word for 2013 - or do you think it's all a bit out there?

Motivational Monday

2013 - come on down!

It's 2013 and I have spent the past few days thinking about what I want out of this new year. I've made my brain hurt with that and so many other things running through it, but I think I've started to see light at the other side.

It is going to sound selfish to some of you, but 2013 is going to be about me. There. Said it.
